A 16-year-old boy drowned while swimming in a stream with friends amid the cold weather in Phu Yen Province, south-central Vietnam on Sunday.

Rescuers handed over the body of N.T.D., 16, hailing from Phu Yen’s Tuy Hoa City, to his family at 5:30 pm on the same day after finding it one hour earlier, according to a local official.

Previously, that afternoon, D. and a group of seven friends, including five boys and one girl, visited Dap Han stream, a tourist attraction in the province’s Dong Hoa Town.

D. then swam in the stream with three of the boys before drowning due to strong flows and low temperature.

“The three friends tried to pull D. to the shore, but all three quickly got exhausted, so in the end, they could not save him,” the official said.

“As it is currently the low tourist season at Dap Han, no adults were around to help D. and his friends at the time of the accident."
