Fishermen discovered a decomposing whale carcass about 9.8 meters long, estimated to weigh five metric tons, washed up on a local beach in Nam Dinh Province, northern Vietnam on Sunday.

Only the body of the whale remained while the head appeared to have completely decayed during the decomposition stage, according to witnesses.

The fishermen then reported the finding to local authorities of Nam Dinh’s Hai Hau District, who buried the corpse of the whale shortly after on the same day.

Residents of Hai Hau, where other whale carcasses had been found stranded along the coast before, said that the one discovered on Sunday was among the biggest.
