A 49-year-old man died in a lightning strike in Thai Binh Province, northern Vietnam when he was directing workers building a river embankment in the area, confirmed a local official.

The victim was identified as Tran Van H., a native of the province’s Hung Tra District.

The lightning strike also left another injured, Nguyen Van Hien, chairman of the administration of Thuy Hung Commune in the province’s Thai Thuy District, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday.

According to the official, a thunderstorm suddenly occurred when H. was directing a group of 10 workers to build the river embankment in Thuy Hung on Sunday morning.

A bolt of lightning flashed and struck H., leaving him dead at the site.

Another man aboard a ship docked at a wharf in the area was injured by the lightning strike and was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

At the time of the incident, the workers were standing quite far apart from each other.

One of them, 10 meters away from H., fell to the ground, but he was not injured, the local official said.

On being notified of the incident, local forces were dispatched to the scene to cope with the aftermath before handing over the body of H. to his family.
