Two schoolboys drowned while swimming at a beach in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam on Monday.
Rescuers and locals searched for the bodies of the two nine-year-old boys for several hours on Monday night.
The two deceased were identified as N.T.S. and H.N.H, who lived in Quynh Minh Commune in Quynh Luu District.
The boys ventured into the beach for sea bathing with their family members due to the hot weather at 6:00 pm on the same day, a representative of the People’s Committee of Quynh Minh Commune said on Tuesday.
While the two were swimming, they were swept away by big waves and went missing.
Their family members quickly cried out for help, so locals jumped into the water to save them.
However, H. was found dead, while the body of S. was recovered at 11:00 pm.
Nghe An Province reports over 30 child drownings each year on average, according to the Nghe An Department of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs.
In 2022 alone, the province recorded 48 children dying by drowning.
The provincial Department of Education and Training is planning to fight drowning among children and students by offering swim courses to kids.
