A man died while two others are in critical condition after drinking alcohol bought two months ago to make vinegar in Ca Mau Province, southern Vietnam, local authorities said on Saturday.
They were suspected of suffering alcohol poisoning, according to the People’s Committee of Thanh Tung Commune in Dam Doi District, Ca Mau.
On Tuesday last week, T.D., 69, K.V.T., 53, and K.X.N., 50, drank one liter of alcohol that N.’s family bought two months ago to make vinegar.
D. developed symptoms of fatigue and sleeping soundly on Friday last week, so his family took him to the General Hospital in Cai Nuoc District, Ca Mau.
Doctors at the hospital concluded that he had died upon arrival.
N. and T. also suffered from fatigue, so their family members rushed them to the Ca Mau General Hospital.
A hospital representative said the two are in critical condition and are being treated in the intensive care unit.
“N. suffers acute kidney injury and is undergoing intensive dialysis. T. also needs dialysis,” said Dr. Ma Nhon Khiem, head of the Ca Mau General Hospital’s Department of Intensive Care and Poisoning Control.
The hospital has admitted some 10 cases of severe alcohol poisoning since early this year and many of them have died.
If those drinking alcohol develop symptoms of blurred vision or one of their drinking companions shows alcohol poisoning signs, they should be hospitalized immediately, Khiem advised.
