The Ho Chi Minh City Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR) has publicized an artist’s impressions of the second metro line project in the city, linking Ben Thanh Market in District 1 and Tham Luong Depot in District 12.
The 11.3-kilometer metro line carries a price tag of some VND47 trillion (US$2 billion).
It will include a 9.3-kilometer underground section and a two-kilometer elevated section, with 11 stations, upon completion.
MAUR is relocating technical infrastructure facilities, such as water and power supply, wastewater drainage, and telecom systems, to make room for the project.
It will do the job in two phases lasting for 20 months.

The second metro line, along with the first metro line, will lay the foundation for the urban railway network development in the city and meet the travel demand of residents in the northwest of the city. |
Leaders of the municipal People’s Committee have determined that the metro line will play an important role in the urban railway network in the city.
The project will be a highlight with the application of diversified technology and the transit-oriented development model.
A representative of contractors said they would mainly conduct the project at night in order not to affect traffic activities and the daily life of local residents.
The metro line was initially expected to be put into commercial operation in 2016 but the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee later proposed pushing back the deadline for the completion of the project to 2030.
Ho Chi Minh City will focus on constructing eight metro lines with a combined length of over 220 kilometers in the coming time.
