A landslide, which followed heavy rainfall, killed two people and left two others injured in Ha Giang Province, located in northern Vietnam, early on Wednesday morning.
The deceased, who lived in the mountainous commune of Ngam Dang Vai in Hoang Su Phi District, were buried under rocks and mud, according to the district’s steering committee for natural disaster prevention, search, and rescue.
The dead were identified as a married couple, Ly Van Th., 61, and Vang Thi Thuong, 57.
Pouring rains battered many parts of the district, damaging fields of crops, sweeping away assets, and destroying at least one house.
Due to downpours, a section of an embankment on a road in the district gave way.
A suspension bridge over the Chay River in Po Ly Ngai Commune was badly damaged after heavy rains.
The deluge and landslide caused a loss of over VND3 billion (US$127,000).
The northern region of Vietnam was forecast to face moderate to heavy rains with rainfall measuring up to 60 millimeters, and scattered thunderstorms on Wednesday, according to the national weather center.
Such rains were expected to trigger floods and landslides.
