A collision between two vessels resulted in the collapse of a dock situated in the Thi Vai River in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, southern Vietnam.
The incident occurred amidst heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon at the Cai Mep-Thi Vai Terminal, located in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Ho Chi Minh City.
The cargo ship named Wan Hai A02, flying the flag of Singapore, which measures 335 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and has a loading capacity of over 142,000 metric tons, veered off its designated navigational route upon reaching a curved section of the Thi Vai River near the terminal.
Consequently, the left side of the Wan Hai A02 ship collided with and pressed against the right side of Vassos 2, a Cyprus-flagged cargo vessel that was berthed at the wharf of the terminal to unload goods.
The collision caused no fatalities or injuries.
However, the impact resulted in the collapse of approximately 46 meters of the wharf, along with a section of the conveyor system and cargo suction equipment located at the dock.
Following the incident, the Vung Tau Maritime Port Authority received instructions to install marine signal buoys that serve as warnings for underwater obstacles.
Additionally, they were tasked with devising solutions to mitigate the risk of oil spills.
The Vassos 2 vessel was also moved approximately 30 kilometers away from the site where the collision occurred.
An investigation into the cause is also underway.
