Security officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City have detected a gun and multiple live rounds in a package and carry-on luggage during separate screenings.
Security personnel at the domestic terminal of the airport found a suspicious package at 19:42 pm on Sunday, thereby working with relevant units and the owner of the bag to examine it.
The parcel was discovered to contain a black gun and 10 bullets.
IQ Logistics JSC sent the package on Hanoi-bound flight VN220, which was scheduled for take-off at 8:00 pm on the same day.
The firm failed to show valid papers for the gun and bullets.
The case was transferred to police in Ward 2, Tan Binh District for investigation.
On Saturday night, security officers detected a bullet in a 36-year-old passenger’s carry-on luggage at the checkpoint of the domestic terminal.
The passenger, named Luu Quang D., was set to board flight VJ284 heading for Hai Phong City, northern Vietnam.
The bullet, which still had explosive material, was identified as a type used for AK-47 rifles.
During the examination period, the passenger failed to show any valid paper related to the bullet, so security officers cooperated with the Southern Airports Authority to book D. for the violation and handed the case over to police.
Security officers at local airports have frequently detected guns and bullets sent by air. Guns have been found being disassembled into pieces and placed in packages for air transport.
In mid-April, security officers at Da Nang International Airport in the namesake central city discovered a package containing a gun and 10 bullets. The package was set to arrive in Hanoi.
Another case was reported at Da Lat Airport on March 14. Security officers found parts of a homemade gun and two bullets in a package at the airport.
On July 8, security officers at Tan Son Nhat International Airport found a package sent by a postal service provider containing a Claymore mine housing.
On July 5, a checked bag owned by a foreign passenger was discovered containing six plastic bullet casings at the Ho Chi Minh City-based airport during screening. The passenger was set to fly to Phu Yen Province in south-central Vietnam.
As per Vietnam’s prevailing regulations, firearms and explosive materials are banned from being brought onto aircraft.
