As the weather showed significant improvement on Sunday, ferry and high-speed boat trips bound for Phu Quoc City resumed the same day, after being suspended for three days to avoid possible incidents caused by the foul weather conditions in southern Vietnam.

The Port Authority of Phu Quoc City, off Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam, confirmed on Sunday morning that ferry and high-speed boat trips to Phu Quoc from the provincial cities of Rach Gia and Ha Tien were permitted to resume normal operations.

The high-speed boat service bound for Nam Du, another island destination off the coast of Kien Giang, from Rach Gia was also restored.

Following the resumption of the services, throngs of tourists and local residents bustled around a ferry terminal in Rach Gia to buy tickets for Phu Quoc and Nam Du trips.

Nguyen Thanh Phat, a native in Rach Gia, said that rains and thunderstorms began hitting the Mekong Delta province between July 27 and 29, leading to the suspension of waterway services to Phu Quoc and thereby affecting his business.

“On being notified of the service resumption at around 7:00 am on Sunday, I visited a local market to buy food and other necessities for my family on the [Phu Quoc] island,” he said.

On July 27, the provincial Inland Waterway Port Authority announced the suspension of waterway services linking Rach Gia, Ha Tien with Nam Du and Phu Quoc due to bad weather conditions.

The authority noted that the high-speed boat service from Rach Gia to Hon Son, an island off the province’s Kien Hai District, remained operational because the large high-speed boats used for the route are able to resist level-5 wind gusts and ensure safety for passengers.
