Vietnamese national team midfielder Doan Ngoc Tan netted a crucial goal in Thanh Hoa FC’s 1-1 draw against Thailand’s BG Pathum United in their third group-stage match of the ASEAN Club Championship in Thailand on Wednesday.

Thanh Hoa FC, also known as Dong A Thanh Hoa, are a Vietnamese professional football club competing in V.League 1, Vietnam’s top tier football league.

They visited BG Pathum United’s BG Stadium in Pathum Thani Province, central Thailand for their third group-stage match in the 2024-25 ASEAN Club Championship on Wednesday evening.

Following a corner kick in the 70th minute from Thanh Hoa FC, BG Pathum United’s defense failed to clear the ball from the penalty area.

Doan Ngoc Tan, fresh off winning the 2024 ASEAN Championship with Vietnam the previous Sunday, pounced on the loose ball and struck with the outside of his right foot to open the scoring.

After conceding the unexpected goal, BG Pathum United intensified their attack and were rewarded in the 87th minute, when Sanchai Nontasila equalized for the Thai side.

The final moments of the match saw both teams playing an open and attacking style, but neither could find the back of the net.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw on BG Pathum United’s home ground.

With three matches completed in Group A of the 2024-25 ASEAN Club Championship, an international football competition between domestic champion club sides affiliated with member associations of the ASEAN Football Federation, Indonesia’s PSM Makassar lead the group with seven points.

Thanh Hoa FC are in second place with five points, ahead of BG Pathum United due to a goal difference.

Malaysia’s Terengganu have four points, followed by Cambodia’s Svay Rieng with three points, and Myanmar’s Shan United, who have yet to earn a point.

“It was a beautiful goal, but it would have been even better if Thanh Hoa FC had won,” Ngoc Tan said after Wednesday’s match.

“Whether I’m playing for my football club or the national team, I always step onto the field with the highest spirit.

“That’s just who I am.

“I want to thank Vietnamese football fans for their support during the 2024 ASEAN Championship recently, and for Thanh Hoa FC today,” he said.

Midfielder Ngoc Tan made his debut in the national team in an official tournament at the 2024 ASEAN Championship.

He exceeded expectations with six starts, including scoring a crucial goal that helped Vietnam secure a 1-1 draw against the Philippines on December 18.
