The Lang Son General Hospital in the namesake province in northern Vietnam has admitted two patients suffering yellow skin and eyes after eating purple steamed sticky rice.

The purple color of the steamed sticky rice was from wild grass, according to their family members.

All the four people in the family developed symptoms of food poisoning after eating the dish.

Two with severe poisoning were rushed to the hospital, while the two others showed mild symptoms so they were monitored at home.

Dr. Nguyen Thanh Do from the intensive care unit of the hospital said that the two patients had red urine, as well as yellow skin and eyes.

They were diagnosed with multiorgan failure, rapid respiratory failure, and methemoglobinemia.

Methemoglobinemia is a condition in which red blood cells are gradually destroyed due to several reasons, leading to the oxygen level in their blood dipping dangerously low, said Dr. Do.

“Many studies show that among factors causing methemoglobinemia are immunodeficiency, drugs, food poisoning, and chemicals,” he said.

“The patients are in stable health conditions after receiving emergency treatment and blood transfusions."
