The stadium in Ba Tri District, Ben Tre Province, southern Vietnam has become a temporary dump as the key landfill in the district has temporarily shut down.

Residents of Ba Tri District in Ben Tre District, southern Vietnam on Thursday complained that a stadium in the district has become a dump emanating a nauseating odor and stealing space for local recreation.

They have also voiced concerns that part of the road surrounding the stadium has been transformed into a garbage dump.

Dozens of garbage trucks have been emptying their loads on the stadium each day since the local landfill’s temporary closure earlier this month.

The landfill was closed following protests from local residents feeling upset that authorities showed no sign of halting dumping at the landfill despite it being overloaded.

As a result, local authorities have allowed the temporary use of space at a waste treatment plant in Ben Tre for garbage from Chau Thanh District and Ben Tre City.

Meanwhile, dozens of metric tons of garbage from Ba Tri District have been piling up at the district’s stadium.

On the same day, the People’s Committee of Ben Tre Province held a press briefing to announce the results of a plan to tackle the environmental pollution at the An Hiep landfill.

At the press briefing, director of the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment Bui Minh Tuan said that issues at the An Hiep landfill are nearly resolved and the odor and leakage from the site have decreased by over 95 percent compared to one month ago.

Some 20,700 square meters of the waste at the landfill has been covered with canvas to prevent the odor and leakage from spreading to adjacent areas.

The province has plans to build a leakage treatment system with a capacity of 30 cubic meters per day and a cost of some VND4 billion (nearly US$168,900). The development of such a system would take six months.

Local authorities will also accelerate the expansion of the landfill by three hectares to increase its capacity and plant more trees surrounding the dumpsite in order to minimize its impact on residents in the neighborhood.

The provincial administration promised local residents that the landfill would not cause environmental pollution once it resumes operation this Saturday.
