New academic year starts in Vietnam

Elementary, middle, and high schools in Vietnam welcomed their students back on Monday morning for the 2023-24 school year.

Millions of students across the country were eager to return to school after their summer holiday, which begins in early June each year.

Over 1.7 million students attended the back-to-school festival in Ho Chi Minh City this morning, up 35,055 year on year.

As many as 2,325 schools citywide reopened their doors to K-12 students.

Kindergartens, middle, and high schools saw the number of students going to school for the new school year soar, while elementary schools witnessed a year-on-year decrease of 28,165 students.

Bui Thi Minh Tam, principal at Au Lac Middle School in Tan Binh District, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the school welcomed 1,330 students for the new academic year.

Vo Xuan Tien, a parent living in Tan Binh, recounted that his daughter was eager to go back to school.

Tra My, an eighth grader at Au Lac Middle School, said, “I expected to see my friends soon this morning, so I woke up early to come to school.”

“After three months of the summer holiday, I was excited to see my friends and teachers again. This school year is so important to me as it is my last academic year at school,” said Xuan Nghi, a 12th grader at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City.

Nguyen Van Be Middle School in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City was equipped with a series of new rooms, such as a music room, a fine art room, and two computer rooms, to improve the teaching and learning quality, said principal Dinh Thi Thien An.

On Monday morning, many roads and streets in Binh Duong Province, a neighbor of Ho Chi Minh City, were crowded with students returning to school.

All-level schools in the southern province welcomed more than 548,090 students, up 37,232 year on year, reported Tien Phong (Vanguard) newspaper.

The capital city of Hanoi opened the doors of over 66,000 classrooms for the new school year, up 846 year on year.

More than 2.2 million K-12 students were back to school in Hanoi to prepare for the 2023-24 school year, up around 69,000 against the previous academic year.
