Vietnamese transport consulting firm Transport Engineering Design Joint Stock Incorporated South (Tedi South) has represented a consultant consortium to propose developing a 23.6-kilometer elevated railway passing through the center of Ho Chi Minh City from Binh Trieu Station in Thu Duc City to Tan Kien Depot in Binh Chanh District.
The consultant consortium has sent the proposal to the Vietnam Railway Authority.
In particular, part of the corridor of the current North-South Railway section in the city will give way to an elevated section from Binh Trieu Station to Saigon Station in District 3.
The remaining section from Saigon Station to Tan Kien Depot was planned to pass through busy roads with numerous houses alongside. The consultant consortium also proposed the 15.7 kilometer section as an elevated one.
It would run along Ba Thang Hai Street in District 10 to the Cay Go Roundabout between District 6 and District 11, then Hong Bang Street in District 5 and the Phu Lam Roundabout in District 6.
It would later run above Ba Hom Street, Road No. 7, Luong Beo Canal, and Nguyen Cuu Phu Street in Binh Tan District before ending at Tan Kien Depot.
Saigon Station is located among thousands of houses in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City, which is one of the most populous areas in the city. It is the final station of the North-South Railway. |
The consultant consortium has proposed turning the Saigon Railway Station into a transit hub for other railways, buses, and taxis. According to the consultant consortium, the location of the station in a busy area is an advantage as passengers can easily access the railways. |
From the Saigon Railway Station, the proposed railway would run to Nguyen Thong Street in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. The consultant consortium suggests expanding the street to 25-30 meters from the current 10-12 meters. |
The current Nguyen Thong Street in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City is narrow with numerous houses on both sides. Rapid urbanization has reduced the land bank for railways, thus resulting in a high site clearance cost for railway development projects. |
The proposed railway would stretch above Ba Thang Hai Street in District 10 and the Cay Go Roundabout between Districts 6 and 11. Ho Chi Minh City authorities should connect metro lines No. 2 and 3a and some steel overpasses to the railway. |

Tan Kien Depot in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City will serve as a station of the second phase of metro line No. 3a after 2030. The depot has been deserted for years. |
The 67-hectare Tan Kien Depot will receive passenger trains of the North-South express railway. |
The North-South railway currently ends in Ho Chi Minh City with 11 pairs of passenger trains per day. The figure increases to 15 pairs of trains per day on holidays. |
