Despite efforts to revitalize the landscape along Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal in Ho Chi Minh City, the canal is still littered with trash.
Garbage covers both the banks and the surface of a canal section from Tan Binh District to District 3, especially around bridge piers and canal edges.
In particular, plastic bags, old household appliances, and styrofoam boxes are piled high in the areas around Bridges 1 and 2 in Tan Binh District as well as Bridges 6 and 7 in District 3 and give out a foul odor.
On rainy days, the garbage follows the rainwater to run straight into the canal, causing pollution.
Residents often gather along the canal for entertainment, then drop litter and take their pets to a path along the canal and let them poop and pee there despite many prohibition signs.
Hoai Thu, a 22-year-old resident in District 3, said “I often get some fresh air in the canal in the afternoon but feel uncomfortable because of the rubbish on the canal banks.
“I have to avoid garbage left by drinkers. I even saw them eating, drinking, and then urinating into the canal”.
The administration in Ho Chi Minh City launched the first phase of a project to clean Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal in 2012.
However, a wastewater treatment plant in Thanh My Loi Ward, Thu Duc City in Ho Chi Minh City is still under construction, so wastewater in the area flows to Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe Canal.
