The Vietnamese Ministry of Health has urged local residents to remain vigilant against respiratory diseases, H5N1 bird flu, and COVID-19, as nearby countries, including China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Cambodia, have reported a surge in the cases of these diseases.
China has recorded an increase in cases of respiratory diseases and pneumonia outbreaks in children in its northern localities, according to the General Department of Preventive Medicine under the Vietnamese Ministry of Health.
In Malaysia and Singapore, the number of COVID-19 infections has soared 50-100 percent over the last week but most of them developed mild symptoms.
Cambodia has reported six H5N1 bird flu cases since early this year, with three fatalities.
Experts have warned that Vietnam should brace for for climate changes that may create favorable conditions for the spread of infectious diseases, particularly respiratory illnesses.
It is now the peak time for trade and tourism activities, paving the way for pathogens to spread far and wide, especially amid children, old people, and those with underlying health conditions.
Therefore, the General Department of Preventive Medicine advises residents against being complacent and heedless.
To prevent and control respiratory diseases, individuals are advised to exercise caution by wearing face masks in public places, practicing regular handwashing with soap or hand sanitizers, maintaining environmental and personal hygiene, keeping the body warm, engaging in physical exercise, and avoiding contact with those displaying symptoms of respiratory illnesses.
