Police officers in Binh Duong Province, southern Vietnam arrested eight people for allegedly producing and sellling counterfeit milk powder with an estimated value of VND14.5 billion (US$589,000), the provincial police department confirmed on Sunday.
This adulterated milk powder racket was led by Vu Thanh Cong, a 36-year-old native of neighboring Ho Chi Minh City.
Binh Duong and Ho Chi Minh City officers seized 7,500 suspected counterfeit milk powder cans and 200 parcels containing around 150,000 empty cans of branded milk powder from four business facilities operated by Cong.
The authorities also confiscated a significant quantity of equipment utilized in the production of the suspected counterfeit milk powder during their raids on these four facilities.
Cong confessed to hiring workers and a manufacturing workshop in Binh Duong’s Di An City to produce imitation products of well-known milk powder brands, which are not yet available in the local market.
He said he offered these suspected fake products on an online platform and hired deliverymen to distribute the items to customers.
Since November 24 last year, Cong had made illicit gains of VND3 billion ($121,600) from running the racket.
The mastermind of the ring also confessed that he had changed the location of his business every month to avoid being detected by police officers.
