More than 200 parishes and Catholic centers in Ho Chi Minh City have been equipped with three-compartment trash bins to promote awareness of environmental protection.

The arrangement of such trash bins at these religious institutes is part of an action program on environmental protection that the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City announced on Monday.

In the program, all of the parishes and congregations across the archdiocese are encouraged to reduce plastic consumption, use eco-friendly products, stop littering, and transform these institutes into greener spaces, according to priest Vinh Son Nguyen Thanh Tin, head of the environment division under the archdiocese.

As of January 10 this year, the archdiocese had distributed 500 three-compartment trash bins to more than 200 parishes and Catholic centers citywide.

The archdiocese this year will encourage parishioners to set up trash bins for sorting waste at source to join hands in protecting the environment, the priest said.

Besides, the archdiocese is set to print 200,000 books featuring guidelines on how to protect the environment.

The books, which will be given to parishioners at no charge, will be released after the Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, due in February.
