Newly-elected State President To Lam held a reception for Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam Xiong Bo in Hanoi on Tuesday, underscoring that Vietnam treasures the friendship and partnership with China, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

President Lam had the Chinese ambassador convey his gratitude to Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi Jinping for his congratulations on his election as the state president of Vietnam.

Vietnam’s lawmaking National Assembly elected General To Lam, Minister of Public Security, state president for the 2021-26 tenure on May 22.

Lam asserted that he was willing to work with Xi to maintain regular high-ranking delegation exchanges.

He suggested China expand its railway systems to border areas between the two nations, and join hands with the Southeast Asian nation to build some rail links in northern Vietnam.

President Lam also expected China to open its wider door for Vietnamese agricultural products and seafood.

Also, the state president appreciated Xiong’s important contribution to the relationship between Vietnam and China.

The Chinese ambassador congratulated Lam on being elected Vietnam’s state president.

He underlined that the Chinese Party, government, and people always cherish the neighborly friendship and partnership with the Vietnamese Party, state, and people.

China sees Vietnam as one of its priorities in diplomatic relations and will deepen the cooperation with the latter in various fields.

The increased relationship is meant to benefit the two nations and peoples.

The Vietnamese state president and the Chinese ambassador highly valued great achievements in bilateral ties that have been made over the past few years.

In particular, the relationship was further cemented after Vietnam's Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong visited China in October 2022 and Chinese Party General Secretary and President Xi paid a visit to Vietnam in December 2023.

Discussing issues related to the East Vietnam Sea, President Lam said that the two sides should strictly implement high-level common perceptions and agreements, and better the settlement of disputes over the Vietnamese waters in the waterway.

He emphasized the significance of cooperation based on the principles of equality, mutual benefit, mutual respect, and compliance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

He also proposed the two countries step up efforts in fostering bilateral ties and raising the relationship to a higher level to move toward marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2025.

The Chinese ambassador affirmed at the reception that China will try to implement high-level common perceptions well and deploy all cooperation measures to strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.

China will also bolster multifaceted ties with Vietnam, while managing and settling disputes over the sea more effectively.
