A sleeper bus driver has been fined after he was caught driving in the wrong direction on a National Highway 1 section in Khanh Hoa Province, south-central Vietnam on Thursday.

The driver acknowledged that he encountered a traffic jam while traveling on the national highway in Ninh Hoa District at 6:00 pm on the same day.

As a result, he made the decision to drive in the opposite direction, bypassing the congestion, to minimize passenger wait time, he claimed.

Traffic police in the south-central province fined the driver VND5 million (US$204) and suspended his driver's license for three months due to wrong-way driving, the traffic police department under the Ministry of Public Security said on Saturday night.

The imposed fine followed the verification of complaints from local residents regarding the traffic violation.

The driver, identified as N.T.H., a 34-year-old resident of Phu Yen Province, which is a neighbor of Khanh Hoa Province, was the subject of the penalties.
