Police in Thong Nhat District under Dong Nai Province, located in southern Vietnam, are investigating the deaths of three people in a biogas cellar in Hung Loc Commune, an officer said on Monday.
The deceased were identified as Do Thi Thu Th., 48, her son Nguyen Trong Th., 27, and her cousin Pham Van Th., 42. They resided in Vinh Cuu District.
A family member of these victims said that Thu Th. was checking her pig farm in Hung Loc Commune at 6:20 am on the same day when she found that Van Th. disappeared.
She asked for help from her husband and son to search for her cousin.
Upon seeing a light from a flashlight in the biogas cellar, her son realized his uncle was in danger, thereby climbing down to save him. However, he suffocated and fainted.
Thu Th. quickly descended the stairs to approach her son in vain, as she also choked in the gas.
Nguyen Hoang Viet, Thu Th.’s husband, immediately went down to the cellar to rescue his family members, yet the dense gas forced him to return.
Viet reported the case to local authorities in the hope of timely saving his family members.
However, all the three were pronounced dead after being taken out of the cellar.
His family opened a live pig farm with 900 hogs in Hung Loc Commune in 2013, Viet said.
The biogas cellar, where the tragedy happened, covers nine square meters and is three meters deep.
