A magnitude-4 earthquake struck My Duc, an outlying district of Hanoi, on Monday morning, according to the Institute of Geophysics.
Many residents in the heart of the city perceived the tremor.
The earthquake was recorded at 8:05 am, and was some 16 kilometers deep.
The shaking lasted for nearly five seconds, said Phan Duc Trong, secretary of the Party Committee of Bot Xuyen Commune under Chuong My District, which borders My Duc District.
“I was having breakfast when I felt dizzy, while metal roofing sheets and walls were rattling for four or five seconds,” Phuong Thao, a local of Bot Xuyen Commune, recounted.
Many residents in some high-rise buildings in Thanh Xuan, Ha Dong, and Nam Tu Liem Districts experienced the shaking of the tremor.
“I was working when I noticed a brief, gentle tremor lasting for four seconds,” said Le Hung, a resident of Thanh Xuan District.
The quake posed no risks of disasters, according to the Institute of Geophysics.
On January 13, a temblor measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale hit Luong Son District in Hoa Binh Province, located in northern Vietnam, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake was felt near many of Hanoi’s outlying districts such as Thach That, Quoc Oai, Chuong My, and My Duc, and was 50-100 kilometers from the center of the capital city.
In Vietnam, earthquakes registering magnitudes between four and 4.9 are categorized as minor tremors, carrying minimal risk of causing damage or injury.
