The Vietnamese sapper unit at the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) in Africa recently repaired and upgraded the main route that runs through many important agencies in the middle of the area to help improve travel conditions for locals there.
The repair was launched in welcoming the 93rd anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union on March 26, according to the union’s Vietnamese sapper unit chapter.
The work was aimed at facilitating people's travel in Abyei, a disputed region between Sudan and South Sudan, covering about 10,000 square kilometers.
This main route has a large traffic volume, linking key agencies such as Abyei Youth Center, Abyei Women’s Association, and the Abyei Relief and Rehabilitation Committee, according to the online newspaper of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Despite the harsh hot weather at over 40 degrees Celsius and sandstorms, the repair work was completed and the road put into use recently, after only three working days.

The road was widened to eight meters with two lanes, and its surface was upgraded and elevated by 50cm from the original state to strengthen its resilience during the coming rainy season.
Deng Aguer, chairman of the Abyei Youth Association, expressed his joy over the road upgrade by Vietnam’s peacekeeping sapper force.
He extended deep and sincere thanks to all the sappers and wished them well to fulfill their tasks and keep giving support to the Abyei region.
Besides the road repair, the young Vietnamese have made the best use of their holidays or free time to help fix and build tables and chairs at schools, assist farmers in planting agricultural crops, and supply clean water to residential areas, hospitals, churches and other places, said Senior Lieutenant Le Huu Khanh, secretary of the chapter.
The chapter members have also actively created connections with the local young communities and played a key role in the implementation of humanitarian activities in the region.
Most of the members are young and have volunteered to join the Vietnamese peacekeeping forces right after they completed their education at school, Khanh added.
