A 41-year-old traffic police officer from Gia Lai Province, located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, has been detained for his alleged involvement in a traffic accident which left one pedestrian dead last week, the provincial police department said on Friday.

The officer is Nguyen Hong Phong, from the police agency of Chu Prong District.

A police report showed that Phong was driving a car from Chu Prong Town to Ia Boong Commune in the district on Thursday night last week.

When he was approaching Ia Drang, another commune in the district, Phong slammed into V.T.H., who was walking in the same direction as him.

The 49-year-old pedestrian was confirmed dead after being rushed to the Gia Lai Provincial General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Following the crash, a large number of residents flocked to the scene of the accident, demanding that Phong undergo a breath alcohol test.

Police officers were called to the scene, where Phong was tested for alcohol, as witnessed by the locals. No results have been announced so far.
