Nha Trang, a coastal tourist city in south-central Vietnam, has been honored by American travel magazine Travel + Leisure as one of the world’s eight best coastal destinations to retire in for its beautiful views, mild weather, and relaxing ambiance.
Located some 400km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City and nearly 1,290km south of Hanoi, Nha Trang comes in eighth in the magazine’s ranking list published recently, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
As the capital city of Khanh Hoa Province, Nha Trang boasts a beautiful beach and is home to an established expat community of about 4,000 people.
With an average year-round temperature of approximately 27 degrees Celsius, the seaside city has dry and wet seasons, with the former running from January through August, while the monsoon season spans from September to December.
Nha Trang has a system of high-quality healthcare, including Vinmec Nha Trang International Hospital, which has modern facilities and an English-speaking staff.
“Most international retirees in Nha Trang opt for apartments or condos in the city center, close to amenities and the beach. There are also options for houses in quieter, residential areas,” Betsy Burlingame, founder and president of Expat Exchange, a global online network for expats, wrote in an article.
Burlingame highlighted Nha Trang as a walkable city with reliable public transportation, vibrant nightlife, and delicious foods.
The city also provides abundant opportunities for recreation, from parks to hiking and boating, she added.
Topping the list is Carlsbad, a city in California State, followed in order by Beaufort, Falmouth, and Ponte Vedra Beach, all in the U.S..
The destinations holding the fifth, sixth, and seventh positions are Ambergris Caye in Belize, Quepos in Costa Rica, and Mazatlán in Mexico, respectively.
To come up with the list, Travel + Leisure surveyed coastal towns and cities in the U.S. and around the world.
The magazine comments that there is something attractive about living near the sea, whether it is the beautiful landscape, refreshing air, or childish fun of splashing in cool water.
Scientists believe that proximity to the water brings in actual benefits, the magazine stated, and concluded that “it is no wonder so many people want to spend their retirement years near the sea.”
