Traffic police in Nghe An Province, north-central Vietnam summoned two bus drivers for questioning after a video surfaced on social media showing them driving two buses to chase and hinder each other in an attempt to overtake on a section of National Highway 1 in the province, a traffic police officer told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Wednesday.
One of the two drivers was already suspended.
The case happened in Dien Chau District, Nghe An Province on Tuesday.
According to the video, the bus belonging to Dong Bac firm ran in front of another bus owned by Thach Thanh firm.
The Thach Thanh bus repeatedly signaled to overtake but the Dong Bac bus did not give way.
The situation lasted a distance of nearly one kilometer where the traffic was high, provoking outrage among commuters.
Police officers later found that the driver of the Dong Bac bus was Le Tuan H., a 31-year-old resident in Nghe An Province, and the driver of the Thach Thanh bus was Le Thanh T., 40, also from Nghe An.
At the police station, the bus drivers explained that their actions were spontaneous and driven by a scramble for passengers.
A local traffic police officer mentioned that they were completing procedures to handle the case.
The drivers may face fines of VND10-12 million (US$390-468) and have their driver’s licenses revoked for two to four months each. A representative of Dong Bac company stated that the firm had suspended its driver and would impose strict penalties in accordance with its rules.
