A tropical depression, accompanied by gusty winds, will likely hit the coast from Quang Binh Province to Quang Ngai Province in central Vietnam on Monday evening, bringing downpours to many parts of the country, said the national weather agency.
The system was centered in the northern waters off Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago in the East Vietnam Sea as of 7:00 pm on Sunday, packing winds of 49 kilometers per hour.
It is expected to move northwest at 10-15 kilometers per hour and enter the coast of central Vietnamese locales on Monday, with little chance of gaining further strength, according to the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting.
Approaching the coast between Quang Binh and Quang Ngai, the tropical depression may travel west-northwest before making landfall in three other central Vietnamese locales: Thua Thien Hue, Da Nang, and Quang Nam.
Due to the impact of the system, the middle and northern parts of the East Vietnam Sea, including Hoang Sa, and the waters off Quang Binh to Quang Ngai could see showers, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and rough seas.
Powerful winds and four-meter-high waves are also possible along the coast running from south-central Binh Dinh Province to southern Ca Mau Province, the southern part of the East Vietnam Sea, including the country’s Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelago, and the Gulf of Tonkin.
From Sunday night to Wednesday, the system may bring 60-120mm of rainfall to the delta and coastal areas of northern Vietnam, the Central Highlands, and the southern region, while higher rainfall of 100-200mm is forecast to lash the central region.
During this period, the central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri should stay prepared for possible floods in rivers and streams, flash floods, landslides in mountainous locations, and inundation in low-lying and urban areas.
