A bridge linking Hai Phong City with Quang Ninh Province, both located in northern Vietnam, opened to traffic on Wednesday, carrying a price tag of VND1.941 trillion (US$76.8 million).

The country’s top legislator Tran Thanh Man and many officials of ministries and locales attended a ceremony held to put the Ben Rung Bridge into operation.

It measures 1,865 meters in length, 21.5 meters in width, and has a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour.

The six-lane bridge spans over the Da Bach River, replacing the existing ferry services that connect Hai Phong’s Thuy Nguyen District with Quang Ninh’s Quang Yen Town.

Work on the bridge began in May 2022 and reached completion in May this year.

However, a project to build a 2.2-kilometer road leading to the bridge on the Quang Ninh side lagged behind schedule due to poor weather conditions and weak ground.

Nguyen Van Tung, chairman of the Hai Phong administration, said that the bridge would facilitate travel and promote socio-economic growth in the area.

The bridge will enable residents to commute between Thuy Nguyen and Quang Yen faster, instead of having to wait 30-60 minutes for each ferry ride or traveling a longer distance along National Highways 18 and 10.
