Police in Ca Mau, the southernmost province of Vietnam, on Saturday issued legal proceedings against a 31-year-old woman for tricking her five cousins into taking ‘high-paying easy jobs’ in Cambodia.
The woman, named Pham My Nhien, a resident in Tran Van Thoi District, Ca Mau Province, was charged with arranging for others to flee abroad.
In May this year, Nhien introduced her three cousins to an unidentified person in Kien Giang Province, located in southern Vietnam.
This person later sent the three cousins to Cambodia for work.
Nhien was also found to have sold two other cousins to the neighboring country, promising them that they could each earn VND20 million (US$793) per month.
However, on June 7, one of them called his family from Cambodia, revealing that he was being forced to cheat others through social media.
He added that Nhien sold them for VND30 million ($1,190) each and demanded his family pay a ransom for his release.
Due to Nhien’s pregnancy, local authorities did not arrest her but have banned her from leaving her place of residence.
Police are continuing to investigate the case.
