The central city of Da Nang expects to launch a new direct flight route to Indonesia, the fourth most populated country in the world and the largest in Southeast Asia, by the end of 2024.

The city's Tourism Promotion Center on Thursday announced that local officials met with Garuda Indonesia and Citilink Indonesia representatives during an official visit to Indonesia to discuss a new direct route to Da Nang, Vietnam's fifth-largest city.

The delegation, led by Nguyen Thi Anh Thi, vice chairwoman of the Da Nang People's Committee, spent the meeting lauding Da Nang’s tourism potential and the growing numbers of Indonesian tourists visiting the city.

The delegation highlighted potential airline incentive policies and discussed proposals submitted by its Indonesian partners.

According to Thi, Indonesia is a promising market due its large population, proximity to Vietnam, and visa-free policy for ASEAN countries.

These factors, Thi said, will contribute to the many opportunities for tourism and economic exchange which will be opened once the route is launched.

Representatives from Garuda Indonesia and Citilink Indonesia expressed a strong interest in expanding their flight networks to hot tourist destinations such as Da Nang.

Citilink Indonesia also plans to launch a charter flight from Jakarta to Da Nang, which is expected to begin in December.

As reported by Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, representatives from Citilink Indonesia and several travel companies visited Da Nang in July to research its tourism and the viability of a new route.

Citilink Indonesia currently operates 59 aircraft on more than 80 routes, primarily serving its domestic markets.

The airline also runs international routes to Cambodia, Timor Leste, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and Saudi Arabia.

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population globally but Indonesians are generally less strict about dietary requirements compared to other Muslim markets.

On July 27, Da Nang's Tourism Development Promotion Fund introduced the Tourism Introduction Program in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to boost local tourism services.

Currently, Malaysia Airlines operates 28 weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Da Nang.

This direct route has not only increased the number of Malaysian visitors to Da Nang but has also opened connections to 170 destinations within Malaysia Airlines’ network, benefiting the Indonesian, Australian, Indian, and European markets.
