The expanded Binh Hung wastewater treatment plant, located in Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, started its operation on Friday morning, with a capacity of 469,000 cubic meters per day, becoming the largest of its kind in Vietnam.
The capacity of the 42-hectare facility was raised from the previous 328,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day.
Luong Minh Phuc, director of the city’s Transportation Works Construction Investment Project Management Board, the investor of the project, said that the plant will collect and treat wastewater discharged by some 1.8 million people living in an area of 2,500 hectares in the eight districts.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony for the newly-renovated plant, Bui Xuan Cuong, vice-chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee, thanked the investor and relevant agencies for their efforts to complete the project.
He also expressed his gratitude to the Japan International Cooperation Agency for its support with loans during the implementation of the plant expansion project.
Besides, he asked the investor of the project to continue collaborating with relevant units to conduct all procedures to run the plant smoothly.
The Binh Hung wastewater treatment plant not only treats sewage but also serves as a ‘green destination’ with a huge area of trees, a laboratory and an environmental monitoring system.
It is expected to become a venue for exploration and education about the environment, according to the investor.
