The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council has officially recognized Lang Son Geopark in Lang Son Province, northern Vietnam as a UNESCO Global Geopark, the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism informed on Sunday.
In 2023, the Lang Son administration collaborated with the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to finalize the dossier for Lang Son Geopark, seeking its recognition as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
The recognition of Lang Son Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark helps the province focus its resources on managing, preserving, and promoting the value of its geological, cultural, and historical heritage, archeological values, biodiversity, and landscapes, according to a leader of the provincial Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
Lang Son Geopark is set to receive its UNESCO Global Geopark designation in Chile next year.
The geopark covers over 4,800 square kilometers of land and accommodates nearly 627,000 people, equivalent to 58 percent of Lang Son’s area and 78 percent of the province’s population.
The geopark was established in 2021 with 38 attractions across four tourism routes.
Vietnam currently has four UNESCO Global Geoparks, including Lang Son Geopark, Dong Van Karst Plateau Global Geopark in Ha Giang Province and Non Nuoc Cao Bang Global Geopark in Cao Bang Province, both in northern Vietnam, and Dak Nong Global Geopark in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong.
