Hong Ngoc 12 bakery, located in Dong Thap Province, southern Vietnam, was levied a VND90 million (US$3,660) fine and a four-month suspension for its role in a food poisoning incident which involved 149 customers last month.
Pham Thien Nghia, chairman of the administration in Dong Thap Province, on Tuesday inked a decision on the sanction against the bakery, situated in the provincial city of Hong Ngu.
The bakery was also required to cover treatment costs totaling VND383 million ($15,569) for the victims.
According to the decision, the bakery committed violations in producing, processing, and providing food causing food poisoning.
The incident happened in August when the 149 victims were admitted to six general hospitals and medical centers in Dong Thap after eating banh mi bought from Hong Ngoc 12 bakery.
Banh mi, a type of Vietnamese baguette filled with cold meats, pâté, and vegetables, is a popular dish in Vietnam.
Local authorities tested stool samples of 51 patients and five food samples from the bakery.
The stool samples taken from 29 of the patients tested positive for Salmonella, a pathogen responsible for foodborne infections.
Among the five food samples, only the pâté sample was identified to contain Salmonella.
