Heavy rains are expected to drench southern Vietnam over the next week, with rainfall mainly occurring in the afternoon and evening, according to the southern Vietnam weather agency.

The meteorological agency said that widespread thunderstorms and downpours in Ho Chi Minh City and other southern provinces could persist until September 18.

Intense rainfall may result in flooding in low-lying areas and those along riverbanks and canals.

The weather agency attributed this weather pattern to intensifying southwest monsoon and a low-pressure trough, which is forecast to travel from the north-central region to central Vietnam between September 13 and 14 before picking up strength.

In Ho Chi Minh City, heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds lashed many areas from Tuesday to Wednesday.

Increased precipitation is anticipated to soak the northern and eastern parts in the Mekong Delta region from Thursday, with affected provinces including Long An, Ben Tre, Tien Giang, and Dong Thap, the agency noted.
