The Mekong River is rising fast, with water levels in parts of Vietnam's southwestern region expected to exceed alert level 1, reaching 3 to 3.5 meters, on September 21 and 22.

Water levels in the Mekong River are climbing rapidly, with Thailand's Mukdahan station recording 11.01 meters, Laos' Pakse station at 10.8 meters, and Cambodia's Kratie and Stung Treng stations at 19.34 and 9.06 meters, respectively.

The rising water levels have been attributed to the effects of typhoon Yagi, whose circulation triggered heavy downpours.

Super typhoon Yagi made landfall in northern Vietnam on September 7, causing widespread damage across several regions.

As of 7:00 am on Monday, water levels at Tan Chau Station on the Tien River in the Mekong Delta had peaked at 2.52 meters, while Chau Doc Station recorded a high of 2.41 meters.

The combination of upstream flooding and rising tides is expected to cause water levels in the Mekong River to surge rapidly in the coming days.

The southern weather center has issued flooding warnings for low-lying and riverside areas in An Giang, Dong Thap, and Long An Provinces.

The Mekong Delta region is forecast to face the height of floods from October 17 to 21 this year.

Water levels in key stations will go down from mid-November to the end of December.

Flood waters in rivers in northern Vietnam begin to recede

Floodwaters in the Cau River in Bac Ninh Province and the Hoang Long River in Ninh Binh Province, northern Vietnam have begun to subside, but the water levels remained above alert level 2 on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the Thuong River in Bac Giang Province saw the water level recede below alert level 2.

Flood waters in these rivers are expected to continue ebbing to above alert level 1 on Tuesday.

Due to weaker rainfall, the flooding in low-lying and riverside areas will improve, beginning to recede within four to nine days.
