Two girls were cycling through a spillway in Nghia Lo Town, Yen Bai Province, northern Vietnam when they were swept into a stream by floodwaters on Saturday, but fortunately they were rescued by locals.

An official from Phu Nham Commune in the town told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Saturday afternoon that some residents saved the two girls, who were identified as T., 8, and N., 7.

The incident occurred at around 10:00 am the same day, when T. was riding a bicycle with N. riding pillion.

After the duo were wiped into the spring with a high water level and strong flows, Lo Van Binh and Hoang Van Quynh quickly jumped into the stream to rescue T. and N..

Their health is now in stable condition, said the official.

Typhoon Yagi, the third storm to hit Vietnam this year, made landfall in the northern region on September 7, with powerful winds of 118-149 kilometers per hour, unleashing torrential rains and floods that have wreaked havoc on many localities.

As of September 18, the typhoon, floods, and landslides had left some 350 people dead or missing, and submerged 70,000 houses in the northern region.
