Northern Vietnam is preparing for an extended spell of chilly weather, with two cold waves expected to sweep across the region between Thursday and Saturday, according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
The first cold air mass moved to the region on Wednesday and is predicted to impact the northeastern and north-central areas starting Thursday night.
The second one, which will possibly be more intense, will arrive in the north by Friday night and impact northwestern and central provinces.
Temperatures in the northern and north-central regions are forecast to range between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius, dropping below 10 degrees Celsius in the mountains.
From north-central Thanh Hoa Province to central Thua Thien-Hue Province, temperatures will hover around 15-18 degrees Celsius.
In Hanoi, residents will experience chilly weather, with lows of 12-15 degrees Celsius.
Over the next 10 days, scattered rains are expected in the northern region and Thanh Hoa, with foggy and bitterly cold mornings.
The middle and southern parts of central Vietnam may see moderate to heavy rain, while coastal and offshore regions could endure strong winds and high waves.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Wednesday asked northern provinces to take measures to protect public health, including avoiding the use of coal stoves for heating in enclosed spaces.
Farmers were advised to reinforce shelters and stockpile feed for animals, as well as adopt solutions for protecting crops.
The coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Kien Giang were urged to keep vessel owners and captains informed of maritime weather risks to ensure safety.
For the upcoming New Year holiday, the northern region will see cloudy skies with early morning fog, followed by sunshine in the afternoon.
Night-time and morning temperatures will range from 11 to 16 degrees Celsius, while daytime mercury may stay at 20-23 degrees Celsius.
Other parts of the country will likely see scattered showers and thunderstorms.
