A 33-year-old Filipino man was detained in Thanh Hoa Province, north-central Vietnam for allegedly snatching a necklace off a woman, who is his compatriot, several days ago.
On Tuesday, police in the province’s Tho Xuan District said they had arrested a Filipino suspect, Gaston Galam Ricky, for investigation on charges of snatching.
The victim, Liezel Kindica, 28, a Filipino national, arrived in Vietnam as a tourist on November 8 and has been temporarily residing in Tho Xuan.
According to the case file, around 9:15 pm on December 21, Kindica was riding her motorbike in Tay Ho Commune when Ricky approached from behind on another motorbike.
Ricky allegedly cut into her path, forcing her to stop abruptly, then grabbed her necklace -- valued at approximately VND24 million (US$940) -- before speeding away.
Kindica reported the incident to the district police around 10:00 pm, prompting an immediate investigation to identify and apprehend the suspect.
After reviewing surveillance footage and gathering relevant information, investigators identified Ricky as the alleged perpetrator.
According to the Tho Xuan police's Facebook page, Ricky had previously met Kindica through his romantic partner.
Detectives were dispatched to track down Ricky and later discovered that he was hiding in Hanoi, planning to flee back to the Philippines.
The district police quickly organized a plan to apprehend the suspect, arresting Ricky on December 22 as he was traveling from Hanoi to Tho Xuan -- less than 20 hours after the crime.
Upon his arrest, Ricky confessed to the crime, and officers recovered the stolen necklace, returning it to Kindica.
The district police have praised and rewarded the officers involved for their swift probe, search, and capture of the suspect.
