The European Union (EU) is releasing an additional €150,000 (US$200,700) as further humanitarian assistance for people in some of the northern Vietnamese provinces that have been most affected by the recent typhoon Yagi.

Accordingly, this latest relief is aimed at benefiting about 130,000 people in Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Cao Bang, Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen, Bac Giang, and Lang Son Provinces, the EU said in a statement on its official website on Friday.

The additional funding will support the Vietnam Red Cross Society to continue aiding people that have lost their homes and livelihoods due to the typhoon, which made landfall in northern Vietnam on September 7.

Support will include providing food and essential household items, as well as cash grants for different purposes, including house rebuilding.

Emergency health services, activities to ensure hygiene and prevent waterborne diseases, and support for schoolchildren are also covered in the humanitarian assistance.

“This amount comes in addition to the €650,000 [$869,600] in humanitarian aid that was already approved last week, in response to this disaster in the country,” according to the statement.

This first aid was meant to help Vietnam address the most pressing needs, such as food, water and sanitation, and healthcare.

To support Vietnam's emergency response, the EU also activated the Copernicus Emergency Satellite Mapping Service on September 11.

The EU said it has so far approved over €2.3 million ($3.08 million) to address the aftermath of Yagi in four Southeast Asian countries including Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, and the Philippines.

The funding is part of the EU’s overall contribution to the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), according to the statement.

Typhoon Yagi, Asia's strongest storm this year, caused damage estimated at over VND81 trillion ($3.29 billion) across northern Vietnam, or twice as much as previous estimates, the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment reported on Saturday.

Countries and international organizations have pledged to provide over $22 million for Vietnam to overcome the impact of natural disasters, the ministry said the same day.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also reported it has received over 220 tonnes of relief goods worth around $3 million from the governments of Australia, Switzerland, India, Russia, and Singapore, as well as from international organizations.

All the goods have been immediately delivered to the provinces of Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Cao Bang, Tuyen Quang, Lang Son, and Bac Kan to support Yagi victims there.

As of Friday, Yagi and the subsequent flood and landslides left 318 deaths, injured 1,967 people, and caused 26 to go missing, according to the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

The disaster ravaged about 282,000 houses and 3,755 schools, flooded or ruined 285,000 hectares of crops and fruit trees, devastated or swept away 189,982 hectares of forest and 11,832 aquaculture cages, and killed some 5.6 million livestock and poultry.

The catastrophe also damaged 796 dykes and 3,517 irrigation and water supply systems, triggering deadly floods and landslides in many northern regions.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development noted that the devastating storm has inflicted severe psychological trauma, particularly on children, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups in the affected areas.

At a conference in Hanoi on September 15, the ministry warned that the typhoon’s impact could reduce Vietnam’s 2024 GDP growth by 0.15 percentage points from the previously forecast rate of 6.8-7 percent.
