Massive rainfall lasting over an hour on Monday evening left the flood-prone Dong Khoi Street in Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam completely underwater.
A downpour began lashing parts of the provincial city of Bien Hoa at around 6:00 pm, causing significant flooding to several local streets, especially a 500-meter-long stretch of Dong Khoi Street in Trang Dai Ward.
Due to the absence of a proper drainage system, water from nearby residential areas rushed down onto Dong Khoi, swamping the area before flowing into a roadside drainage system.
The fast-moving water made the route impassable, resulting in traffic congestion and causing some vehicles to break down.
Some commuters were seen lifting their motorbikes over the rigid median to escape the inundation and continue their journey on the opposite side.

Moreover, the flooding disrupted businesses along both sides of the road, while many residents were forced to set up barriers to prevent rainwater from entering their homes.
Since the start of the 2024 rainy season, Dong Khoi Street has experienced heavy flooding at least three times, earning it the nickname ‘flood-prone hotspot.'
Tho, a local inhabitant, elaborated that there used to be a stream that collected surface water and drained it into the sewer system.
Later, the stream was encroached on and covered by a concrete slab, leading to flooding on the road.
Tho argued that a flood control project on Dong Khoi Street helped improve the water drainage system but failed to completely address flooding on the route.
He suggested that authorities take action to restore the original state of the stream to prevent water from spilling onto the road.
In July last year, the Bien Hoa City administration launched the flood prevention project on Dong Khoi Street, funded by the city’s budget at a cost of over VND23 billion (US$935,000).
