The Ho Chi Minh City administration has approved a project building a pedestrian bridge spanning the Saigon River with a total investment of over US$40 million funded by a dairy producer.
In a decision issued on Friday, the municipal People’s Committee gave the green light to the footbridge project that has been set up and totally financed by Ho Chi Minh City-based Nutifood Nutrition Food Joint Stock Company.
With an estimated total investment of VND996.9 billion ($40.25 million), the future bridge, with its architectural design featuring nipa palm leaf imagery, is expected to break ground in 2025 and be completed in 2027.
The river crossing pedestrian bridge is not only significant in terms of traffic but also serves as a new architectural symbol of the city, connecting cultural and historical spaces between District 1 and Thu Duc City, according to the project’s objectives.
The project will also create a public space that is friendly, safe and convenient for local people and tourists to enjoy moments of relaxation.
The work will run from the Bach Dang Wharf Park in District 1 to the riverside park area adjacent to Nguyen Thien Thanh Street in the Thu Thiem new urban area in Thu Duc City.
The bridge is about 261 meters long, including its cable-stayed main span stretching 187m long, and has a steel girder design.
It will be equipped with traffic lighting and drainage systems, an elevator system and other utility works.
The bridge’s design of palm leaf imagery was proposed by a consortium of Japanese-invested Chodai - Takashi Niwa Architects and Chodai Kisojiban Vietnam and was chosen by the city government in October last year.
The Ho Chi Minh City administration has assigned concerned agencies to guide, inspect and supervise the building of the bridge.
Nutifood is responsible for organizing and implementing the approved project in line with relevant regulations, the authorities said.
