Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Tu, rector of Vietnam’s Hanoi Medical University (HMU), has received the Order of Academic Palms of France conferred by the French president for his great contributions to the medical development cooperation between the two countries.
French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet, on behalf of French President Emmanuel Macron, awarded the order to Prof. Tu at a ceremony held at the French Embassy in Hanoi on Monday.
Speaking at the event, Brochet emphasized that the order was aimed at honoring Prof. Tu, a person who is not only an example of academic excellence and dedication to medicine, but also a tireless promoter of the values of the francophone community.
The diplomat underscored that Vietnamese doctors and pharmacists studying in France are the contributors to the relationship between the two countries as well as to a promising future for Vietnam's health industry.
Prof. Tu, 56, graduated from HMU in 1990 as a general practitioner and completed his residency in anesthesia and resuscitation in 1993 at the same institution.
He later graduated from two anesthesia and resuscitation training programs in France.
In 2000-03, he was a researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research and an assistant lecturer at the University of Paris XII in Créteil, France.
He earned his doctorate in medicine from HMU in 2003, was appointed associate professor in 2007, and became a full professor in 2014.
The professor is the second representative of the Vietnamese medical industry to receive this prestigious award, following late Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ton That Bach.
Initiated by Napoleon I in 1808, the Order of Academic Palms honors individuals who have made significant contributions to enriching cultural heritage values and developing art and science in France and beyond, according to Voice of Vietnam.
