A medical team from Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 6, serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), successfully arranged an emergency airlift to transfer a pregnant woman at high risk of extreme preterm birth to a specialized hospital for urgent care.
The pregnant woman, a Kenyan national with six previous pregnancies, is employed by the UN in South Sudan’s Mayen Abun along with her husband.
According to a local health facility's diagnosis, she was carrying twins at 23 weeks and four days, experiencing amniotic fluid leakage, and at risk of extreme preterm labor that could threaten both her life and that of the twins, Suc Khoe & Doi Song (Health & Life) newspaper reported on Saturday.

As Mayen Abun is facing difficulties in both medical equipment and travel conditions, the health facility asked Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 6 to support in urgently transporting the pregnant woman to a more advanced hospital for treatment.
The hospital promptly dispatched an air medical emergency team, including an obstetrician, by helicopter to Mayen Abun.
They safely transported the woman to Rubkona airport in Unity State, South Sudan.
During the flight, the Vietnamese medical team closely monitored her condition, prepared for any emergency, and was ready to deliver the babies onboard if necessary.
Upon landing, the team transferred the woman to another medical team, who then took her on a separate flight to a specialized hospital in Juba, South Sudan’s capital, for further treatment.

The seamless coordination between Vietnam’s Level-2 Field Hospital and other stakeholders is a point of pride for the hospital and showcases the professionalism and strong sense of responsibility of Vietnamese medical staff in international missions, according to Voice of Vietnam (VOV).
This success not only highlights the hospital’s capabilities but also enhances the image and reputation of both the hospital and the Vietnamese peacekeeping force at the UNMISS, VOV added.
