Can Tho City in southern Vietnam is seeking to open new air routes connecting it with China, a local official said at a workshop on green energy on Thursday.
The workshop was held in Can Tho by the local Department of Industry and Trade and the Vietnam Asia Net Zero Alliance.
During the workshop, Ha Vu Son, director of the department, said that the city had recently held discussions with He Wei, Chinese Ambassador to Vietnam, and Wei Huaxiang, Chinese Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City, about establishing new flight routes to connect Can Tho with several locations in China.
In particular, the city sees future air routes to China’s Yunnan and Chongqing as a means of fostering trade cooperation.
Can Tho also has plans to resume air routes to Thailand, Singapore, and some other countries in the hope of better leveraging Can Tho International Airport.
Can Tho International Airport, with a capacity of five million passengers per year, plays a key role in the development of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, Son said.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the airport serviced six international routes and 39 domestic ones.
However, only two international routes, to South Korea and Malaysia, remained operational during the pandemic.
Eight domestic routes have continued post-pandemic, connecting to Da Lat, Phu Quoc, Hanoi, Da Nang, Vinh, Hai Phong, Con Dao, and Quang Ninh.
