Police in Cau Giay District, Hanoi have detained a 57-year-old babysitter for allegedly assaulting a one-month-old boy and inflicting a resultant brain injury on him.
An official from the Cau Giay People’s Committee told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Friday morning that police officers had summoned and apprehended Nguyen Thi L., a resident of northern Tuyen Quang Province, for a probe into accusations of child abuse.
A short video clip had previously surfaced on Vietnamese social media, showing an infant being abused physically.
In the clip, a woman was shown beating the baby boy and shaking him violently though he was crying.
The incident happened in Nghia Do Ward, Cau Giay District.
Y., the mother of the victim, said that her family had hired L. as a babysitter for VND8 million (US$314) per month.
She started her job at Y.’s house on November 5 and always showed love for the child.
However, after reviewing the footage from a camera installed in the house, Y.’s family discovered that the baby boy had been brutually assaulted.
Y. then took her baby to Vietnam National Children’s Hospital in Hanoi for a medical check-up.
The infant was diagnosed with a brain injury.
Y. fired the babysitter and reported the abuse case to local police.
