Vietnam’s top chess player Le Quang Liem beat his American opponent Hans Niemann in the quarterfinals of the Julius Baer Generation Cup 2022 on Friday morning (Vietnam time) to advance to the online tournament’s semifinals.

The Julius Baer Generation Cup is a tournament in the Champions Chess Tour 2022 with the participation of 16 players.

The prize money is US$150,000 in cash, with the champion receiving $25,000.

Liem qualified for the quarterfinals as the sixth-placed player after 15 games.

He and Hans Niemann traded wins in the first two games on Friday morning.

The Vietnamese chess ace, playing black, went on to draw Game 3, and a 44-move win in the fourth encounter gained him the right to face Arjun Erigaisi from India in Saturday’s semifinals.

The other pair of tickets to the semifinals went to ‘chess king’ Magnus Carlsen and German prodigy Vincent Keymer.
