The People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City has promised a VND300 million (US$11,980) reward to each athlete winning a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, which will be held from August 28 to September 8.

Silver medalists will receive VND200 million ($7,990), while bronze medalists will be awarded VND100 million ($3,990).

The municipal People’s Committee will award VND30 million ($1,200) to four coaches and seven athletes participating in the Games.

The authority has mobilized private resources to fund these rewards to encourage and motivate athletes.

The Vietnamese delegation for the 2024 Paralympics, which will feature 549 events for athletes with disabilities from around the world, includes 14 members led by Nguyen Hong Minh, deputy director of the Sports Authority of Vietnam.

The delegation comprises two officers, one doctor, three coaches, and seven athletes competing in six events across three disciplines, with Pham Nguyen Khanh Minh in athletics, Do Thanh Hai and Le Tien Dat in swimming, and Le Van Cong, Nguyen Binh An, Dang Thi Linh Phuong, and Chau Hoang Tuyet Loan in weightlifting.

Notably, all seven athletes who have qualified for the 2024 Paralympics are from Ho Chi Minh City.

The delegation’s goal is to try their best and achieve one to two medals.

Le Van Cong, a weightlifting competitor, remains a key hopeful despite a shoulder injury.

He is committed to rigorous treatment and training with the aim of bringing glory to Vietnam.

At the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil, Cong won the gold medal in the men’s 49kg weightlifting with a record-breaking lift of 183kg, marking Vietnam’s first Paralympic gold.

At the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics, he secured a silver medal.

The Vietnamese delegation is scheduled to depart for Paris on August 23, with the logistics team leaving on August 21 for preparation.

The budget for the delegation’s participation will be covered by the state budget allocated in the Sports Authority of Vietnam’s 2024 plan.
