A Vietnamese calligraphy artist from Can Tho City recently created a giant ‘non la’ from hundreds of normal-sized ‘non la,’ creating a stunning new attraction for tourists and locals in the Mekong Delta city.

Dao Thi Cam Suong, the calligraphy artist behind the sculpture, said that she was inspired by her love for Can Tho, the local culture, and its residents.

A 'non la' is a traditional Vietnamese conical hat typically made from bamboo and straw.

Suong’s giant conical hat took 89 days to transform from idea to reality.

It is made from 540 normal-sized ‘non la,’ each decorated with traditional Vietnamese calligraphy of proverbs, poems, folk songs related to the city, and the names of other cities and provinces from across Vietnam.

The massive ‘non la’ measures eight meters in diameter and six meters tall.

It currently holds the record for the ‘largest calligraphy conical hat model in Vietnam’ according to VietKings – Vietnam’s record keeping organization.

The project was funded by a private company.
