110 people die in accidents during holidays

240 traffic accidents occurred nationwide over the past five days, including Liberation Day (April 30) and International Workers’ Day (May 1), killing 110 people and injuring 185 others, traffic police reported. The five days ran from last Saturday, April 27 until yesterday afternoon, May 1, said the Road Traffic Police Department, under the Ministry of Public Security.  Compared to last year’s holiday season (four days), the number of accidents was doubled, the number of injured victims was higher, and the death toll was lower, according to the Department. Meanwhile, the National Traffic Safety Committee reported that 9,643 traffic accidents between the beginning of the year and the middle of April, killing 3,364 people and injuring 9,691 people. Compared to the same period last year, the number of accidents fell by17.2 percent, the number of injured victims decreased by 23.22 percent, and the death toll increased slightly, 0.36 percent. In related developments, Cho Ray Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City reported higher numbers of hospitalizations due to traffic accidents during the recent holiday season. On April 28, the hospital received 86 victims of traffic accidents, of whom 64 suffered from brain trauma. A day later, the hospital treated 63 people with brain injury. On April 30, about 100 other victims were hospitalized, of whom 66 suffered from brain trauma. On normal days the hospital receives 50-60 patients from traffic accidents.
